circa 1860's New Zealand Maori War's watercolour ink and pastel painting / drawing on card or paper of Henare Taratoa at Gate Pa by Horotio Gordon Robley (1840- 1930). This is a genuine item by the artist and is not a print. This is a rushed work as opposed to the watercolour at the Turnbull library which depicts a similar but much more detailed and finished item. I have studied Robleys signatures as his signatures did vary, using some variations in print and the written form, this is original. I have also studied his writing and both the print and written form are clearly in his hand. The writing is somewhat faded due to age. It reads as follows "Gate PAH, HENARE TARATOA, who drafted the famous order for the protection of unarmed, or wounded men, and the respectful treatent of the dead" To the outside of the frame it is 45.6cm x 40.9cm across, the actual artwork is 27.5cm x 22.8cm across. This had been framed around the 1960's-70's and needs re-framing. The picture depicts a flag represnting a Christian cross, inverted new moon, and a pointed star.
